Windows 7 hangs for a second then back to normal

I'm working on a computer and it's got this awesome feature where it will periodicity hang for just a second, maybe 2, then resume normal function. Everything stops, mouse, kb and streaming audio/video, keystrokes are skipped. Everything in Event viewer looks ok, there are some cert related errors and warnings but nothing that would relate to this. Nothing that we know of has changed lately and it's worked for quite a while which would make drivers seem to be a non-issue but I've made sure most of them are up to date. All windows updates are installed and none were done right before the issue started. I've ran virus and spyware scans and made sure everything looked ok there. Prime95 passed the 1 hour test I did, I planned on running it longer tonight when it's not in use any longer. Google has a slew of these types of issues but not much in the way of resolutions. Any one run into something like this?

win 7 x32 /w 4Gb ram and an E8400 if it matters.

One very overlooked cause of periodic hangs is NTFS errors. I'd suggest running chkdsk first then, if the hang persists, moving on to more advanced diagnostic tools such as ProcessMonitor, ProcessExplorer, and Autoruns. Running chkdsk first, eliminates any file system errors as the culprit.

Open an elevated command prompt and run; chkdsk C: /x /v /f /r /b , exactly as shown below:

Sorry, forgot to mention I also ran sfc /scannow and have been keeping an eye on process monitor with nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't ran hijackthis, yet, but it's probably next on the list even though the chance of it having a virus or spyware are pretty slim.

Good that you ran sfc /scannow, but that won't repair any file system/disk errors that may exist. I only suggested running chkdsk in order to eliminate that as a possible cause.
