Windows 7 giving 'Disk corrupted / unreadable'

I installed Windows 7 Home Premium OEM 64-bit Monday, and today it would not wake up from Sleep mode. I had to use the reset button, and after logging in it came up with a 'corrupt/unusable' error. Going through the System log, it appears my HDD (a 74GB Velociraptor) was giving numerous file system errors when I tried to wake the system. I ran CHKDSK, and it seems to have found and repaired the issues. However, I noticed that all my Windows Update history is now gone. Is this a sign my drive is dying? It is 5 years and 2 months old, so just past warranty, nice!

Is there a trial / free version of SpinRite? It sounds great, but at $90 I could just buy a couple new HDDs. All my docs, music, etc. are on a separate drive as part of my disaster scenario, so recovery of the drive isn't a huge issue; it will eat up a good chunk of time reloading everything, though.

Unless you know someone that has it then no sorry. But does work wonders.
 
Well, now I don't know what to believe. CHKDSK only once gave that error, and every drive test I've used (HDTune, WDDiag, SeaTools, etc.) says the surface and disk are fine. Must have had a small hiccup that threw it off. Been running for the last month with no issues at all. I'll keep an eye on this, though.
 
There are basically two kinds of disk errors:

1) Hardware errors
2) Logical (software) errors

If a chkdsk /r or other surface scan doesn't detect hardware errors, then it might be a logical error in the disk structure that caused lost or corrupted files. A power glitch, hard shutdown, or software bugs could cause file corruption.

In between, overclocking or memory failures could cause the wrong things to be written to the disk.
 
Sometimes strange things can happen during "Sleep." I have never trusted that state and never will use it.
