So after after downloading and rebooting due to an AVG Antivirus update, my computer fails to boot passed the Windows 7 logo. Tried a startup repair from the OS DVD with no luck and it gave me this error code: 0x490. Last good known config doesn't work, and unfortunately I'm an idiot and have no system restore to fall back on.

Anything else I can try or am I looking at reformatting?

From the error, it looks like the bootloader and/or MBR are hosed. Windows 7's startup repair should automatically try a bootloader and MBR restore, but you can do it by hand.

Try this:

And/or this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

If those fail, you could probably use the Ultimate Boot CD or a Linux live distribution to backup your data, then reformat the system. I haven't run into many instances where a MBR and bootloader recovery fail and I can still salvage the system without a full wipe.

I know this won't help you ight now, but....For the future, you might want to look at making system image backups or making clone images of your boot disk. Disk space for backups is pretty cheap these days and there are several good paid and free image backup programs. Such backups are priceless when faced with disk failure or with a trashed or malware-infected system.

Hi,

To resolve the error code 0×490 you can perform a clean boot up, which uses only a minimal set of drivers and start up programs. It helps to eliminate software conflicts and then you can fix the error. To resolve this problem with the hardware device perform a hardware clean boot and check the devices and reboot the computer.

You can try this:

Hope this helps you.
