Windows 7 - connect to a network tells me I'm connected :/

Howdy,

I'm trying to connect to my work network via a VPN, but all the sites I've read suggest doing the same thing, and every time, it doesn't work.

It's been a long time since I've touched VPN stuff, so I'm not even sure if what I want to do is possible. I'd like to stay connected to "normal" internet and my LAN, but also connect to the work VPN.

So far, the sites I've read all say go to the network and sharing center in windows 7, and click "connect to a network..." which just brings up a reminder that I'm connected to a network (and offers no way to disconnect). The "connect or disconnect" link on "view your active networks" does the same damn thing.

So... everything I try to do just reminds me I'm on a network (my home network), and won't let me do anything else.

This is the first time Windows 7's new networking stuff has particularly annoyed me. How do I add another connection / connect simultaneously to a VPN?

I think you can set it so that the vpn can connect, but you'll still use local dns on the connection. I'm not on a 7 machine right now so i can't check it out on mine.

Try right clicking the vpn connection from the bottom right hand corner, where you'd click to connect it. Right click, then properties. see if you can find the option to use your local network.

I did this on mine to avoid having websites blocked on my computer when i connect to the office vpn.
