Windows 7 cannot resume, but I don't have hibernate on, just sleep.

In the last week or so I've been having resume problems on my Windows 7 box. It just hangs. However, nothing on the machine has changed to my knowledge, and I don't even have regular hibernate on in the first place. I just had sleep enabled.

Looking around the net I see there is a hybrid sleep mode, and indeed, this was enabled on my machine. I've since disabled hybrid sleep, but I've been also trying to figure out how to fix the hibernation mode. I tried the powercfg.exe /hibernate on or off toggle but is there anything else I should do?

This hanging is very disconcerting, and although with me it's OK since I can usually force a full reboot, I'm sure my wife would be stuck. But like I said, in the meantime I've disabled hybrid sleep.

Well are you sure it's hung? Power button press doesn't wake it? I ask because I know on some newer systems, peripherals plugged into USB 3.0 ports may not wake the system.

Try disabling C-States in the BIOS?

I have run into this issue a couple times. Once it was the power supply and the other a re-install of Windows fixed it. The main reason for the re-install was that after trying several things I didn't get anywhere and the re-install fixed the problems without having to touch the BIOS.

I'm having similar issues with my computer (Windows 7 x64 SP1).

A few weeks ago, my computer didn't wake up properly (from automatic sleep state) after pressing a keyboard key. The computer tried to wake up with fans running but seemed to shutdown then reboot to POST screen and then hung. Had to reboot computer to get it to run.

No known changes were made to the operating system and no hardware changes either. Previously waking up from sleep state was without problem.

Checking Power Options in Windows Control Panel, noticed Hybrid Sleep was enabled, so this was disabled as there has been speculation in various forums etc that Hybrid Sleep may cause wake up issues. Hibernate mode was set to never, and Sleep mode set automatically at 30 minutes.

However, occasional wake up problems still occur!

Ran various diagnostics to check RAM, HDD, and to check for Malware, but nothing of concern was found. Flashed BIOS to latest version as a precaution in the event that the original BIOS may have been corrupted.

Manually setting computer to go into sleep mode (instead of shutting down), usually results in the computer waking up without issue after pressing a keyboard key.

Then disabled automatic sleep mode (set to never). Computer only goes to sleep when I do so manually now.

Examined Windows event logs and there was mention of "Rasman" causing some errors around the time of waking up difficulties. Also, a recent log entry mentioned something about "hybrid sleep" causing an error, but Hybrid Sleep mode had already been disabled!?

I did notice recently (while automatic sleep mode was still enabled) that just before the computer went into sleep mode, and with computer disconnected from the internet, an internet connect message box was displayed requesting connection to the internet. This was because Firefox browser was still active, but I had manually disconnected from the internet, and Firefox was wanting to reconnect.

Basically it appears at this time that there may be software conflict between sleep mode and internet connection. There may also be corruption of software (ref. hybrid sleep mode error when hybrid sleep mode had already been disabled).

May have to reinstall dial-up modem drivers (aka: internet connection software) and in the worst case uninstall Windows, wipe drive clean, and then reinstall Windows and all other software.

What kind of "internet connection" software? Dialup, DSL / PPPoE, NetZero, or something else?

The power issue regarding things plugged into the USB 3.0 slot means that USB 3.0 drivers need to be installed.

Docking stations are famous for that issue.

Hmmm... Interesting.

I do have a third party USB 3.0 card in the machine. The machine's mobo is USB 2, but I installed the USB 3 card later (albeit a couple of years ago). However, I installed drivers for the card at the same time.

Do you mean updated USB 3 drivers?

Yes check the company website for any driver update as I am sure there are.

Many times if you googled your third party USB 3.0 card model number you might find other people complaining about your very same issue.
