*edit - problem fixed via system restore

windows 7 pro 64bit new install.. this machine was running win7 beta and rc since forever ago, I finally bought the retail version since my rc expired today

intel core2 quad core
geforce 8600gt -> dell 2405fpw via DVI

during install the screen went blank black for serveral minutes but setup completed. I set resolution at native 1920x1200 and turned on aero glass, all was well. was several hours into using my machine for work as i normally do, high cpu/mem usage vmware related stuff and all was well.

decided to let it install windows updates, including graphic card driver. rebooted, got black screen on login. rebooted to 640x480 mode with F8, was working fine. downloaded nvidia.com geforce8 series win7/64bit package, but install failed saying it couldnt find compatible driver.

after rebooting again, now I get the black screen as soon as I login, whether I choose safe mode, vga mode, last known good config, or standard boot. now my machine is useless

is there a fix without reinstalling win7 from scratch and just never upgrading the video driver since it worked out of the box?

I had similar problems with the win7 beta and rc but was able to eventually set things right and it worked flawlessly for months, but now I cant recreate that magic fix for black screen of death on windows 7 retail
