Windows 7 - any way to disable this Taskbar behaviour?

The last hovered-on application on the Taskbar stays "lit" or "highlighted", even if the cursor is no longer hovering on it. I find this annoying.

Is there any way to disable this?
 
I'm beginning to think maybe my trackpad software is causing this problem (even though my trackpad is set to disabled while my mouse is plugged in).

It's just such an odd issue. I don't see why MS would make their OS behave this way, so I'm thinking it's some sort of bug.

Can anyone please confirm whether or not this behaviour is typical of Win7? I'm pretty sure it's my trackpad software, but I just need more evidence; I'm not able to go into a store and just try out demo machines.
 
No, that isn't a normal behavior. Usually, if you hover the cursor over an application in the taskbar, the image of the application window only remains as long as the cursor remains hovered. Once you move the pointer away, the image normally disappears shortly afterward.

It could be a problem with your trackpad driver, your trackpad configuration, or even a video driver issue.

The only way to fix it on my system is the following:

Every now and again (and when the system boots up), I get Windows asking for permission for my trackpad software to do something. If I hit "Cancel", I get normal Taskbar behaviour. If I let it run, I get the abnormal behaviour. It's really weird.

I'm guessing it's just bad trackpad software/drivers. Just glad it's not Windows, because it would have been beyond stupid behaviour if it was the default.
 
I have this too and I could not figure out how to get rid of it so I just dealt with it. It happens in win8 as well.

Seems I spoke to soon, as the problem is back again, even when denying the trackpad software at the prompt.

I'm going to look into updating all drivers for now.
 
Lately, I've been finding that the problem exhibits itself seemingly at random. It may somehow be related to clicking on items on the Taskbar and requesting various app focus and such in quick succession (I click on stuff very quickly). Maybe it somehow screws it up.

Also: it happens with or without Aero animations and such.
