So I've got a Biostar TA790GX 128M with a 5 month old BIOS. I've been looking at picking up a Phenom II X3 720 for a few weeks and this talk about being able to potentially open up the extra core has me ready to purchase...the only problem is that my BIOS will not support the new processors without an update.

I'm a huge noob when it comes to updating BIOS. I've only done it once and that was via a floppy disc that someone on this forum made for me. In looking at my options, I can update via Windows with the AMI BIOS updater that came with the board, but I'm a little concerned that it won't work correctly in Windows 7 Beta, which I'm currently running. If anyone has used a Windows based flash utility and can chime in as to whether it will work or not, I'd really appreciate it.

Um actually I have the similar mobo and I just popped the updated BIOS on a USB flash drive on start up. Make sure to read the directions in the manual on how to do so. I believe on startup you have to hit F8 or F12. (I updated with my 920 processor on the mobo, I didn't have any older cpus to deal with)

You can...but why take the risk of bricking the mobo if it crashes in Windows? Especially a beta version of an OS?

Don't be lazy ;)

Use a standard or USB floppy and do it through the bios screen.

Noooooo..... DON'T DO IT! I stupidly bricked a mobo that way under Vista 64. NEVER use BIOS flashing utilities under Windows.

Well, I'm convinced. Looks like I'll update via a USB memory stick. Thanks!
