Windows 7 and no internet

so, this is a weird issue that i noticed starting after last months (july) security updates. after updating, i reboot. after the reboot i had no internet. i checked everything. my IP settings were correct (dhcp, reserved ip), i could ping my router, i could even login to my router but nothing was getting out to the internet. reboot. nothing. i turned off the windows firewall, nothing. my other computer in the room had internet. so i reboot again. still nothing. to rule out hardware, i reboot again but load vista (dual boot). internet works!

so now, i go to reboot back to 7 and inadvertently shutdown instead. so i turn the computer back on, boot to 7, and viola, internet works. thats weird right?

i can now repeat this consistently. any reboot, either straight back to 7 or to vista, makes 7's internet not work until i do a COLD BOOT. wtf?

I had a similar problem with the RC version of Win 7 Ultimate. The solution ended up being a new driver directly from the manufacturer of the NIC's chipset. The one included the OS would say that I had a local connection only when I was actually connected to the Internet. Microsoft offered me a different driver, but it wouldn't even install. That is why I went back to the get it direct from the maker of the chipset of the device.

no wireless, its an integrated gigabit nic in my gigabyte p45 based mobo. i will give a different driver a shot. ive just been using the one win7 RC installed.

good to know mine installed flawlessly and updated 2 weeks after install i was amazed. so it does have its failings. please post your results and how you did it. thanks trying to learn the glitches early. i think we got a good o/s on our hands

I installed Win7 RC1 7100 on a Dell Vostro 200 (E2200, 2x512MB DDR2, GeForce 8800GTS 640 OC, onboard sound/lan, G33 chipset mobo), and sometimes, when I boot the machine, the network icon comes up either with a yellow triangle or a big red X on it, indicating no internet connectivity or no network altogether. Usually, shutting down the machine and then doing another cold boot fixes it, or sometimes disabling the network and then running the troubleshooter, which then re-enables the network, works.

Dunno what the issue is, whether it's my router, or what.

argh, i installed win7 ultimate RTM (legally, from technet) and i still have this issue. i went to realtek's site and grabbed their latest win7 drivers but they have the same issue. although now thanks to virtuallarry, i found that disabling the nic and re-enabling it make everything work. dumb. atleast i dont reboot too often. this is very annoying.

oh and my board is a gigabyte ep45-dsr3 with two realtek 8111C gigabit nics. one thing i havent tried is using the other nic. i have one turned off in the bios.

I had the same issue after the recent windows updates not sure which one ( there where 9 in total) i did a system restore and so I have the net back but now i have to d/l each update to find out what killed my net

Thanks for your input. I noticed you are useing a Gigabyte board similar to my UDP3 that has 2 nics..have you tried swapping nics yet..and if so what was the result ? After my win 7 32 bit install was porked..I uninstalled it and am going to stay with the 64 bit ver..along with my old win XP standby for awhile. I tried the WinXPMode Virtual PC and it functioned just fine.. I have the resources to run it without any hiccups. I am rambling and getting off this threads subject..so back to you and the other guys.

im digging up my old thread. i never did solve this issue. i did find that if i disable my nic and re-enabled it in windows it would fix me up. beats a cold boot. i did try swapping to the other nic and it didnt help. yesterday i got a new evga x58 mobo with realtek nic's and they have the EXACT SAME ISSUE. i tried both onboard nics and im using the latest (Mar 10, 2010) realtek drivers. the weird thing is, while there is no internet, local lan stuff works fine just like the gigabyte board and the same disable/enable trick works... i didnt check to see if the boards are using the same exact model nic or not but im guessing they are.

Check to see if you have this little devil in your services list:

"##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762 ##"

If you do, stop it and disable it. It is actually the Bonjour DNS Responder Service, and I believe it is the cause of the "Unidentified Network."

i disabled the above oddly named service, rebooted and my internets still work! it seems in my case this service was installed when i put an Adobe CS3 product on my computer.

first of all, i had no idea what the services list was, but i went to the start menu search box, typed in "services" and *d'oh* there was the services icon

in Services, i did not see

but i saw

(seems that string2's display name is "...string1")


i have no idea if any of my programs uses this bonjour service, so i didn't want to disable it completely.
instead, i chose "delayed start" and this seems to work great for me as a solution to my nic card problem. no more disabling and enabling my card every reboot, and an end to this problem that has vexed me for weeks!

don't know how the heck you figured this out, but in my book, you are a genius..thank you!!
