Windows 7 Alt-tab: disabling window preview

One feature I find inconvenient about windows 7 is that when you are using the alt-tab command, and you pause too long on a potential window, all the other windows turn clear and the window that you are focused on appears only. Is there some way to disable this? The problem is that when it happens, the actual alt-tab command window gets obscured behind the windows you are switching between.

I looked on google and learned that you can use windows xp's type of alt tab by pressing right alt after holding left alt, but I was wondering if there is a way to have aero's thumbnail previews while alt-tabbing, but not have the actual windows come up and block the alt-tab switcher window.

Please let me know if I am being unclear.

no no, flip 3D is even more useless because moving the windows into a stack is disorienting.

the best for me would be to have vista's alt tab in windows 7 basically. I want to see thumbnails but not the actual windows themselves popping up.

Right click "Computer" in an explorer window and choose properties, click on "Advanced System Settings" in the left panel. On the "Advanced" tab, go to the performance section and click on the "Settings" button. Uncheck "Enable Aero Peek". Hit the "Apply" button and then "Ok".

Now try to ALT-TAB. Does this change do what you want? If not, just undo it by re-enabling Aero Peek.

@lefenzy Looks like this is an issue with the windows gadgets. I found that if I open up "Windows Task Manager" and kill "sidebar.exe" which happens to be desktop gadgets, alt-tab works fine as in it always stays on top of the windows you are switching to. Clearly this is a bug and hopefully Microsoft fixes this at some point.
