I have an windows 7 3 user license.

I had one of my license activated on my pc and I just upgraded my hard drive to an SSD.

I tried to image windows 7 from my old hard drive and I could not do it successfully so I installed a fresh copy of windows 7.

Now if I activate windows 7 on my ssd does it count as a the second license being used?

It probably will count as an additional activation.

But you can call Microsoft activation center and explain they will take care of it.

As soon as that second key is registered as "active" in Microsoft's systems, the license is considered active.

If you purchased the retail version (which seems likely given it's a 3-pack) then it's not a big deal. Worst case scenario you call the activation hotline, explain the situation, they give you a new activation code, but I doubt you'll need to do even that. Transfer rights are part of what you're paying extra for in the retail versions of Windows.

If you have an OEM version, then you would lock both copies to the same set of hardware, and Microsoft would be unlikely to help you. There are no transfer rights with OEM copies, the license expires when you try and move that copy of Windows to any other hardware.

Wierd. Retail-boxed copies should come with 30 or 90 days of free telephone support.

Anyways, if the motherboard was the same between the two activations, then it probably did not chew up an extra activation.

Even if it did, you can call their activation line to transfer the activation.

It's a retail version but it was purchased more than an year ago. I upgraded my hard drive to SSD and did a clean install of windows and trying to activate the copy now.

All the places I look at only has the automated telephone system to activate and I am not able to find a telephone where I can talk to a real person.

Just went through this

I just upgraded my HDD to SSD.
Go to restore from image created by windows backup tool and no luck.
Said to hell with it and just did a fresh install to SSD and reused key.
Activation successful.
Same went with Office 2010.

Switch back and forth between old and new drive to move some stuff over and delete fluff from HDD. Unplug juice and sata from HDD and now I'm all set.
Next year when I do my Haswell build I'll probably move the SSD over to that one and install Windows 8. Plug the old HDD back in to the current box and rock it like its June 2012.
