I use swiss italian language with a swiss french keyboard layout.
there's a key that lets me do the accents.
Usually you hit it, then the vowel, and there you hare èéàäöü etc.

It's not working anymore. If I click the key, it will just write ^^ instead of waiting for the vowel. This normally happens only if you push it twice.
the spanish simbol you put on the n in nino senor etc. doesn't work at all instead.

I checked all the language and layout settings.
Something must have gone wrong.
On google I couldn't find anything about this issue.

If there's no solution I'll have to format because right now it's impossible to write in any language other than english :/
I can still use the dedicated èéàüöä keys, but I can't do capital letters with accents or type ``u how it should be written anymore.

thanks for your input

Don't know, but a temporary workaround would be the character map. You can memorize the key codes and type it in long form. Not ideal, but not terrible either.

this morning when I turn on the PC it works again, but I opened firefox and it doesn't work anymore now!
it has something to do with the black screen of death and the log-on anyway.
Really weird stuff.

Sounds like it may have something to do with Firefox. See if it does not fail if you don't open Firefox.

I restarted teh computer and retried, but this time it didn't work from the start.

Since I deactivated the log-in screen, it should not show, but that time it worked it did show, even if the settings were different.

I'm going to try if reactivating the login screen fixes the problem.

EDIT: restarted the computer with log-in screen: now it works in the first few seconds, but after that it stops working again.
I tried closing some apps, but the weird thing was that when I was in Word and was writing ``E all the time to test it, it got ONE letter right then only ``E again.

Hi, I'm using Windows Vista and I have the exact same problem. I've been using the Portuguese keyboard layout and recently found out that I am no longer able type accented letters.

I do not know when this exactly started to happen since I do not write a lot of Portuguese on the computer, but it sure is going to be a real pain starting to copy paste accented letters to be able to communicate with friends and to do business related stuff.

I've noticed that Firefox has been crashing ever since too. It could be related. I will try to change some settings and disable extras to see if the problem goes. Or even uninstalling it.
Also, Windows Update recently downloaded and installed updates.
This is all I remember happening before I noticed that I could no longer type ´´e and ~~a correctly.

EDIT: Well, I just gave administration powers to Firefox and it stopped crashing. And if that's not enough, I can type é and ã there but nowhere else. Now I removed the administration powers and it doesn't crash but also doesn't type ´´e and ~~a correctly anymore.

EDIT: I found the problem. It was a hidden virus that slowed my computer startup(just like in your case, the accented letters worked for a few seconds at the start because the virus was being executed)

I found the virus here: C:\$Recycle$
Under the name of: B8DEA5BB224.exe
Renaming it and restarting my computer solved everything and now it became fast as it used to be.

I have no clue where I got it from. I'll just leave this here:

Hi guys!
I created this account just to be able to post regarding this topic.

My colleague got a few email from DHL regarding shipments at the office.. we do alot of business with them, so no biggy she thought and opened the zip files that were sent. double clicked the Exe file, command prompt opened, then shut down. After that she couldnt use accents on her computer!

time passed, around 2 days to be exact, until she came to me talkin about this problem. I searched the net, and stumbled upon this thread.

After reading it might be a virus, i proceeded to download Malwarebytes, and, what do you know? it was a malware. After removing and restarting the computer, Her accents now work!

Its really weird how we could have recieved a virus from DHL's own mail!

anyways, figured people out there with similar problems would like to know the solution; Malwarebytes!
