Windows 32bit and 4GB Memory

I thought I understood this, but I ran across something the other day that made me wonder.

I have a Dell Precision 390 running XP Pro, Q6600, 4GB of DDR2-667, and a 768MB 8800 GTX.

Once I got all the drivers loaded, I looked and saw that Windows reported 3.25GB of memory. No surprise there.

But since the Q6600 was a G0 (SLACR), I needed to install a BIOS update to rid the system of an error message during boot. After the new BIOS was installed, Windows reports 3.5GB of memory.

I've never seen it this high, and this happens with the new BIOS on all the Prec 390's I work with (I work with them daily).

I thought that since the video card has 768MB of memory, then I would see only a hair over 3GB. So, I now I have to ask, how does this work? 😀

Good question. Yeah, you should only be seeing just over 3GB. Unless for some reason Windows XP Pro isn't seeing all of the 768mb of the video card, which is possible.

Have you checked to see how much memory is actually showing up with the vid card?

How would I go about doing that?
