Windows 3.1 Installation Question

I have a copy of Windows 3.1. The first setup disk installs correctly, then it asks to insert the disk labeled "Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk 2". I put in the 2nd disk but it keeps asking to put in the 2nd disk. Do these disks need to be labeled a certain way? I've labeled the 2nd disk "disk2" but i won't work.

Any help would be great.

Most likely your second disk is corrupt. That wouldn't be surprising, considering how old the disk is. (You ARE using the original Microsoft-issued disks, aren't you? 😉)
 
I'm using my backup copies, of course. 😀

I recreated my 2nd disk and the problem still occurs.... I noticed in the setup.inf file it has something like this:

[disks]
1 = "Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk #1", disk1
2 = "Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk #2", disk2
etc..

So I labeled the disks, "disk1, disk2, etc." but that still didn't work.

 
If your original 2nd disk is damaged, then any copy of it that you make is still going to be damaged the same way.

In the progress window where it shows which file is currently being copied, check to see whether the 2nd disk contains that file.
 
Right...

I meant I made a copy from my hard drive to the 2nd disk (I have the disks saved on my hard drive). The file is CGA40.FO_ and it is on the 2nd disk.... It's pretty wierd.

I'm not sure why this won't install.
 
Are you installing to the same machine that has the HD with the Win31 disk images? If so, you MIGHT be able to install from the HD. I've done a lot of app installs from disk images of floppies.
 
The title of the disks has to go like this:

"disk(then EXACTLY 6 empty spaces)1" (or 2,3, 4 etc)

The key is that there needs to be exactly 6 spaces between the "k" and the disk number.

You can create this title by going to the "format" command on the "A:" context menu. I think you'll have to make new floppies to do this
 
No need to reformat. Just insert floppy and enter:

label a: disk{6 spaces}2
label a: disk{6 spaces}3
label a: disk{6 spaces}4
etc....
 
Download it.
I'd check the "abandaned ware" sites and you should find it. Obviously you legally own a licence for it, so downloading the media should not be an issue.
