Windows 2k reinstall probs. Please help!

On my Windows 2000 machine, I'm having problems:

1) I kept getting these "Run-time error. Do you wish to debug?" errors when I would open a broswer or go to certain webpages. It never happened in the past, but just started acting weird.

2) When I would remove a program using Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, it would do its uninstall (like normal). Then, however, at the end of the uninstall, it would throw up a message with "HKEY" in it saying that the entry for that program could not be removed from the system registry.

3) I've been using Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum since summer. About a week ago, the program decided not to recognize my burner anymore. I reinstalled it and then got an error "Cannot create Creator. Error status: 0x00040154"

Since I was having all these weird problems, I decided to just reinstall Windows 2000 (since that usually fixes most things). I didn't do a clean wipe of the harddrive because I wanted to save my files. Anyway, I started the setup, and then it told me to restart. Then, it asked me if I wanted to boot from the CD. I first by-passed that because I figured setup had already copied all of the correct files to reinstall windows on the harddrive. So, when I didn't hit a key when it said "Boot from CD?", it just went to this evil blue screen (the one that says something about "If this is the first time you've seen this message, restart your computer. Otherwise, check for viruses... blah blah"). It also said something about "Disk I/O Error: 0000040100". Okay, so I restarted, didn't boot from CD again, and got the same blue screen. Restarted again and actually booted from the CD that time. It just copied the setup files as it did before and asked to reboot.

This is as far as I can get! I've tried doing the Emergency Repair stuff, the Recovery Console, etc. Nothing's working. I have a lot of important files on my computer that I need!

So, I thought about putting Windows XP on it and trying to install that, since it's obviously not liking Windows 2000. I just really need to get into Windows to save my files! Has anyone had any similar problems or does anyone know what my problem could be? Thanks in advance!
