Windows 2K Pro problem

I am running windows 2000 Pro on my computer and every so often the CPU jumps to 100% and stays there for 5-10 minutes and then goes back down to 1-2%. While it is at 100% the SERVICES.EXE runs at about 99 CPU. Is there anything I can do about this problem? Also sometimes after restarting 'My Computer' will not load the drives but if i go to 'My Documents' i can get to the drives but when i try to burn a cd or add music to winamp or any player it freezes up and i have to close the task.

Any help with ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

if you dont have the latest updates that could be a place to start... aslo it might not be a bad idea to run a spy/adware remove tool such as ad-aware or spybot
 
all those suggestions are good: anti virus, plus anti-spyware/ad-ware
next: make sure the cdburner and cd player isnt on the same ide channel as
your hard-drive. finally how much ram do u have ?
and one more: can your ram pass memtest86 ?
