Windows 2k Pro and Virtual Memory

Why is it that I can't disable Virtual Memory completely in Win2k Pro so that the PC uses RAM only like in Win XP Pro? Whenever I set VM to 0 I get error messages telling me there's not enough VM available to run programs etc.. etc.. I nkow in Win XP I can set VM to 0 so that the PC runs off of RAM which greatly improves performance. I have 512 MB or RAM which is more than enough.


Anyone have any ideas on this?

1. Don't you think the people who design the VM system at MS have a little more idea about how operating systems should work than you do?

512 is not enough for 2k or xp if you set VM to 0. 1024MB is the golden sweetspot for XP 😀. In 2k it's better to leave the pagefile enabled.

If virtual memory bothers you...set it to a very basic setting...8MB!!!?!

Truly though, for any windows system, microsoft engineers recommend virtual memory be set for optimum performance...as follows for any NT based system...guidelines for the minimum
NT4, 2K, XP...

RAM <= 128MB
VM = 3x RAM

128MB < RAM <= 384MB
VM = 2x RAM

384MB < RAM
VM = RAM

Because you never disable virtual memory, no matter what the setting says. Virtual memory is part of every modern OS and playing with that setting will only cause problems.

Just leave it alone.
