windows 2k or xp on a duron 1.3ghz

I gave my uncle a 1.3Ghz duron processor recently and I was wondering which OS is better for his setup? windows XP or 2K? Its not exactly the fastest system on the planet so not sure which one will run better.

Duron 1.3GHz
256MB SDRAM (Generic stick)
13.6GB HDD

I currently have a Duron 1.3ghz, 256mb DDR memory for a secondary computer, and XP runs fine on it.

I prefer 2000 but XP should work OK also.

Either of those will run quite nicely on that system, if your Uncle is not a computer whizz, then I would say XP Home would be a better choice.

I prefer 2k,

No need for all the "bloat" in XP... Reguardless if you can turn it off or not...

I have used both,

Stick with 2k.

If he is easily conned into those "mess-up your computer wizard" things then XP may not be for your uncle. My grandpa ALWAYS likes to bridge all his connections (imagine having firewire, usb, wired and wireless connections ALL BRIDGED!!) and also mess up his internet by running the MSN 8 wizard that screws with his DSL.

Windows XP can be more novice-friendly, unless your novice likes to play with wizards (uninstall the Microsoft Sh!tty Network first thing, to avoid that pitfall). 2000 would be faster on that setup, but unless he's a power user, he's not likely to notice the difference. 2000 also can be a little more complex and confusing to a non-geek at times. Since either would run well enough, it's really up to you, since you know the intricate details of your situation, to pick the apporpriate OS for this system.

But if XP was not around, its the same difference between 98 and 2k...

Most can handle 98.

So 2k should be ok..

But he did have point when saying you DO know the details and the knowledge of your relative...

btw xp sucks w/ only 256mb ram ddr2100 or 3200 dont matter. You need more than 256mb to run xp IMO and others.

That depends on how he intends to use the computer. For everyday tasks such as e-mail, web browsing and moderate office work, 256mb is enough.

I have to agree. I have XP on my Dell Lattitude and that thing only has 128MB of RAM. All I use it for is Internet and MS Office, but it works great. Hell... it works better than 2000, which surprised me because any other PC I've used XP on I have found to be more sluggish with XP than 2000.

2000. More stable, less bloat, less "automated", and less contacting the web and microsoft for every little thing. Some like "the xperiance" but I don't.

I like 2000 so much my $95 from newegg XP disk is collecting dust. Installed it last year and immediatly hated it.
