Hey all, I am upgrading our server which is a HP Proliant DL380. It currently has 2 73GB SCSI drives in it right now. According to device manager it has a Compaq Smart Array 5i Controller in it.

First question is how do i know if I can add another drive to this controller or if its already full?

Second, I am looking at purchasing this drive: http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...dpNo=1418311&CatId=135

The specs on the controller say Ultra 3 compatible so this drive should work with it, correct?

Note that the drive you linked to has a 68-pin connector for the SCSI bus. If you're planning to use the drive in the hot-swap racks, that's not going to work. My suggestion is to start by determining what exact drive HP would sell you to upgrade your server, then work from that info. The info I Googled on "HP Proliant DL380" suggests they use Serial Attached SCSI as the interface now, but that's just for the current model, so check your bases.

An HP 5i is a original parallel scsi controller, non SAS. That is an old controller, indicating to me that your server is a few years old. If your DL380 has that in it, then you probably need 3.5 inch scsi drives. A DL380 should have 4(?) bays in the front. To mount drives in the open bays, they will need to be in the Compaq/HP drive trays. At one time, installing non Compaq/HP drives on their array could burn the raid card out. If you have two drives and they are on the raid controller, then they are probably in a mirrored configuration. If you hope to add drive space to the existing array, you would probably need to add two drives and convert the raid 1 to a raid 10. Windows will not automatically see the new space. If you then want to capture the new available space you will need partitioning software to access the new empty space. Acronis has a server capable product for this. There is a command line utility to change Windows partition sizes, but it is not for the faint of heart. I do not think you can add a single drive to a mirror and convert it to a raid 5.

The safer way would be to add two more drives, put them into their own mirror and then move some data from the original drives to the new ones. If this data is in a network share, a new share would need to be created, then everyone would need to have the location remapped, or their logon script edited to reflect the new location.

None of the above mentioned stuff is anything to be taken lightly. If you are not familiar with arrays in servers and how to configure them, I'd suggest finding a company in your area that works on HP servers. While it may not be hard to do, it helps to know what you are doing so you don't crash the server.

This place sells all sorts of HP stuff, older items included, and you should be able to contact them and get the right drives for your server.

Ok, I contacted someone from that sillworks place and I founds some drives that are compatible with this server. My only question now is, I dont have to buy two drives right? I am not in need of redundancy, just space. thanks.

Depends on what sort of array you have. RAID1,5,0 JBOD or just adding as another drive? Any way you go you can add just one drive, but depending on the raid type or lack thereof you may need to do some config changes

I'm not sure how a single drive will work on that array, as I have never added just one drive to use for storage. My assumption would be that it would treat it as a raid 0, and just let it be a single drive, but I do not know that for sure. It may also try to assign it as a hot swap.

There is a bios level array configuration for the raid card, and a windows utility for configuring the array. If your server was setup using the HP smart start cd, the windows version of the array configuration utility should already be installed. The link below has the latest windows gui version.
