What do you feel would be the best operating system for speed, gaming, and just general use? I have an AMD Athlon XP 1600+ with 512 Crucial DDR, DVD-R burner, 2-40 gig HD's, PNY Geforce 4 TI4200 and it's all on a Shuttle AK32 motherboard.

Win XP. The windows server line is not designed with these uses in mind, they are designed to be just what their name implies, a "server".

XP was designed as a desktop OS, I would recommend using it for your desktop.

2k3 server is too expensive to waste on gaming. Plus there is probably more overhead.

WTF would make you want to waste money on Win2K3 Server for a gaming workstation?

Did you read the posting guidelines here? Noone here condones piracy, probably the reason your stupid RTM thread was locked.

Something tells me once the mods see this thread it'll be locked too and you'll have a nice disabled account.

Look, just so you know I am going to school and have this available to me for educational purposes. I don't know if you consider it "piracy" if my school pays for it, but if you do, oh well. I am still wanting to know if it would be a wise switch. My school was able to get a hold of RTM release for an operating system/files class and posted that it would be available to students in the class. I don't know how exactly they can do this, but if it's there, why not?

Then be more specific next time.

Anyway I'd ask to check out that license agreement, there's probably a lot of restrictions on where you can install it and how you can use it.

Especially when it comes to the server product line.

Id go with XP, its a Desktop OS not a Server OS, The server part could give you problems. Im getting server 2003 for my server (365 day free trial of RC2) and im just hoping it will run games such as UT n UT2003. Anyone know if it does for that matter?

It'll probably take a bit to get games and the like working, I installed it and almost everything desktop-wise is disabled by default. I don't even think it installed sound drivers automatically. If you want to play games I wouldn't even try installing it.

I think you should go with XP if it's for your desktop. A Server line of operating systems are meant to be installed and left alone to do their job. It's not to your benefit to use it as your desktop os.

one other thing that hasnt been mentioned thusfar.

All current games are written for use under Win XP. It's not unlikely that some of your games will not run or run incorrectly under 2003 Server.

Simple, XP. 2003 Server is a server product, optimized for that purpose not for local games.

Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional. Depends on how your device drivers are optimized.

What is will be the best Windows operating system for server duties? Windows 2003 Server - Product line.

Actually, they changed it several months ago. Not a major issue, but just clearing it up

I know, but I think it was still after the first RC which is still "right before release".

Poontos: Have to disagree with you on the best server OS thing buddy. 2003 may hit the top of my list when I see what the final layout of it is (compared to Beta 2), and maybe only then after the first service pack that fixes the things Microsoft should have coded correctly in the first place. Server OS' are things that I want to be stable as hell, and 2003 has a lot more bells and whistles to nail down.

2000 gets my vote for now. I hope to hell they get rid of that stupid "Type your excuse for rebooting or shutting me down" section in the shutdown screen of 2003 beta 1 & 2, in the final version.

I had no idea it was setup as such, but that is something I would really like to have. If one of our guys reboots my servers without talking to me first I sure as hell want to know why they did it.
