I am setting up a small office network for the first time and have a few licensing questions. We need the following servers: Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS, Exchange, Web Server, SQL Server, Terminal Services, and File Server. The SQL Server will run our business system (Prophet21) and we will connect to it from a client application on the Terminal Server. We have a total of 30 Users that access the servers as follows: DC/DHCP/DNS/FS (30 Computers), Exchange (25 Users), TS/SQL (20 Users). Each user has their own computer (2KPro/XP) but users share computers often so I believe Device CALs will be best. Things I have learned from reserch are:
1. SBS will not run TS in application mode.
2. Server 2003 will require a CAL for each comp. using TS while Server 2000 accepts built-in TS CALs from 2KPro/XP)
3. SBS Premium offers everything I need except TS so I will need a minimum of 2 Servers
Questions:
1. Will I need a CAL for every computer that joins the domain?
2. If I purchase SBS Premium CALs with they allow me to access TS on the second server? (A MS Tech said something about SBS CALs allowing access to the "SBS Stack")
3. If using Server 2003 Standard will Standard CALs allow me to access applications purchased separately and installed on that server (IE: Exchange, SQL, Terminal Services.)
4. If Q: 3 is True and I have two servers will I need to two CALs for each user so they can access both servers?
5. Will this be cheaper than buying SBS Premium and the more expensive Premium CALs
Basically I need recomendations on the best (and perferably least expensive) route to take to meet my server/licensing needs.
Thanks!
