On several of my servers, going to windowsupdate for the first time FROM THE START MENU LINK causes IE7 to crash after attempting to add update.microsoft.com to the trusted sites list. This is occurring when IE7 is installed automatically after an unattended 2003 SP2 cd is used, and also after IE7 is installed from windowsupdate.

Here are the steps:

1. Open start menu and hit Windows Update link.
2. IE7 opens and goes to update.microsoft.com.
3. Prompted to add http://update.microsoft.com to my trusted sites, even though http://*.update.microsoft.com is already there.
4. Click add, and add again to add site to trusted sites. Hit close after site is added.
5. IE7 immediately closes without any message. Event Log lists it as an unexpected closure of the application, and the faulting module as ntdll.dll.

On a VMWare Workstation with the network configured as NAT and 2003 installed using the unattended CD, everything works fine. I'm not sure if 2003 is perhaps trying to verify something in the link and can't. Also, if I go to update.microsoft.com manually by typing it into the browser, it also works fine.

Before I call MS, any suggestions?

EDIT: I've confirmed that if I go to windowsupdate manually, add it as a trusted site, and then use the link, its fine.
