Windows 2003 functional level and external trusts

Imagine if you will a domain that is currently in Windows 2000 mixed mode. There are no NT4 DCs in the domain, but here are external trusts to domains that contain NT4 DCs. I want to raise the finctional level of the domain to Windows 2000 native, but a coworker fears that this will break the external trusts that are important. I tell him there will be no effect. Who is right?

You are correct. A 2003 forest will have no issues making a trust to an NT domain and vice versa, as long as your name resolution is set up correctly.
