Windows 2003 and High ping in online games

Hi all


I have a problem that doesn?t even make me sleep at night................!!!!
When I play online games on windows 2003 (I only play Americas Army) I get huge high ping....some times the ping would jump to 1000+!!!!

Any ideas...????

Right now I'm back to windows XP and I can't wait to go back to windows 2003.
I have one problem in windows XP that makes me hate it so much...when ever my Hard drive reads or write the PC performance becomes degrading until the Hard drive settles down, this is bad when U play online or when u wanna do something on your PC while copying huge files on the hard drive.

I saw it.

Sounds like either a crappy chipset, or bad drivers. Or you're using IDE with a crappy chipset and bad drivers. 😛

Seeing as how XP and server 2003 are built using the same code, Id say its either all in your head or you something something running on XP that isnt running on 2003. Perhaps a virus program? spyware of somesort?

System spec could help......

what kind of hard drive are you using where in gaming it greatly effects your play like that? 5400 rpm ata 66 or something? btw, server 2003 is not recommended for gaming and everyone ive ever spoken to that has used it for such has always complained about FPS and lag.

Well, you could use something other than a server OS to play games on.

Server OSes do a lot of caching of data and instruction, since there is an option in System Properties to optimize the system for programs or cache.


I think that the OP hasnt configured the OS well enough to use as a desktop, but its not worth the time. Although i full agree with everyone else when i say use a desktop OS to game on...

I'm not th only one with such a problem most of my friends have this problem too.
Any way I have 2 PCs, the first one has the following:
Abit BD72II MOBO
WDC 80GB 7200 RPM HD
512 MB DDR 333

My 2nd PC which is my main PC:
Abit IS7-E MOBO
2 WDC 80GB 7200 RPM HD
2* 256 HyperX DDR433

P.S. Ultra DMA is enabled on the 2 PCs

For you people with hard drive performance problems (except Salamandar), make sure you're using DMA and not PIO. DMA ATA33 on an old HD is better than PIO ATA100 on a new fancy drive. To check, look at the properties for your IDE controllers in Device Manager.

I'm not th only one with such a problem most of my friends have this problem too.

Man, I wish my friends and I had the kind of money to blow like this. I could afford a nice pile of upgrades for that kind of cash. I mean, Server 2003 isn't exactly what I would call "inexpensive".

I got a 180day free trial in a Unix mag. 😉 More than enough time for me to figure out I just prefer unix-like systems.

I have an MSDN subscription and I still dont run Server 2003 on my desktop.

But when I got my copy from my fathers? office as they don't want to switch from windows 200 server so the copy is mine

Let me get this straight; they spent $600+ on a server OS they have no intention on using? If they just "got a copy" odds are you would still need to buy licensing in order to use it.

As for your XP Problem: My inital guess would be that 2003 simply comes out of the box with newer chipset and/or IDE controller drivers and that's why it's having a better time with the hard drive; if that's the case it's not exactly a complex proceedure to go to the manufacturer's website and download updated drivers.

BTW if they can afford to buy you 2003 as a desktop OS than they can definetly afford to buy you some better hardware.

They didn't buy it for me, the stupid system admin who asked for the new OS realised after geting a copy that some of the software they use wont work with windows 2003 so i asked my father if i can take it , = he said yes. As easy as that 😉

go buy yourself a new computer and put XP Pro. on it and use it for gaming than use this existing machine for 2003 server so you can learn to use it as a server

Great Advise...but I spent all my money last week and I'm now Jobless....so u see empty pockets doesn't buy a new Computer 🙁
