Hello Guys....

Finally I upgraded the OS of my old computer(P2-450) to Windows 2000. Almost everything works fine, except that now when I do a Shut Down the computer doesn't turn itself off as it did with Windows 98se. Now it shows the "It's now safe to turn off the computer" and stays there with the power supply still on, although the two hard disks actually turns off. What's worse, if I push the power button in my case it doesn't works, so the only way that I have now to turn the computer off after it shows the "It's now safe...." screen, is to use the power button of my power supply.

The mobo it's an Abit-BH6 with the latest bios, P2-450 with Windows 2K Pro SP3.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance.

Ensure ACPI is enabled in the BIOS. It is a HAL problem. Hardware Abstract Layer. MS HAL changing MS Technet has several other troubleshooting guides also.

Here's what worked for me:

Go under Control Panel -> Power Options -> APM.

The "Enable Advanced Power Management" box is probably unchecked....Check it to enable APM.

Boom! It should work now. What mailing address do I need to sent the invoice to? :)

Some older computers don't support ACPI well enough for Windows 2000 to be able to use it. In that case, you may need to turn off the computer by holding in the power button for at least 4 seconds. That will turn the computer off without using the switch on the back of the power supply.

Thanks Guys...... I must say that all of your coments are correct:

MedicBob: I checked the document that you pointed me at the Microsoft site. It seems that since I activated ACPI in the BIOS after installing Windows 2000 the OS didn't recognize it, and there's no way to change that beside re-installing Win2k. So right now the Computer type is listed as Standard and not ACPI as it really is.

Blue Weasel: You were right, APM was not active. I checked that option on and now the computer is turning off, although it's turning off in a somewhat weird way, I mean, when I used to turn off the computer with windows98, after I had selected Shutdown, the hard drives would park themselves and stop spinning at the same time. Now I can hear the hard drives parking their heads first but keeps spinning for a couple of seconds before actually turning off together with the power supply.

jliechty: Didn't now that trick of keeping the button pushed..... it worked!!

Since I haven't installed anything yet beside the OS I think I might go the way of re-installing the OS with the ACPI function in the BIOS active.

Thank you all for your valuable help.

Cheers!

If you feel brave, try changing the power management in the BIOS and then going into device manager and deleting the entry that you don't want. It should re-detect on reboot.
