Windows 2000 "Upgrade" ?

Here's my question, I have finally decided to ditch Windows 98 and ME because I'm tired of stability problems. I ordered Windows 2000 pro. OEM upgrade from direct deals for $104 because I have a full version of Windows 98SE. My question is can I do a clean install of Windows 2000 from the upgrade CD like I can with my ME upgrade CD or do I have to install Windows 98 then upgrade. Also, I want to use NTFS, can I boot off the Windows 2000 upgrade and format in NTFS then install ? TIA

it should not be a problem to do any of the items you mentioned...just know you won't be able to go back to FAT32 once you convert the drive to NTFS

BTW, I also have a 128mb stick of Crucial PC133 cas2 on its way to bring my total to 320mb os CAS 2 PC133, and a new IBM 75GXP 30.7gb 7200rpm, and a sound blaster live value to replace my OLD sound blaster 64d

all your hardware looks good to me...i have 512megs of PC133 CAS2 and a SB live! also. dunno how well it'll run w/ your Slot A T-bird tho...

I knew that the Win 98 CD would work for the upgrade, I was just wasn't sure if I could do a clean install from the upgrade. Also one more question, can I boot to the Windows 2000 upgrade and install it from there or do I need a boot disk ?

good to know some of us still buy software os. i didnt say me, i just said its good to know🙂

he means how will the win2k cd know he is ugrading is legit? can he only upgrade meaning non format, or can he format, pop win2k in, and itll ask for the 98 cd??

i wouldnt know, i had the full cd. but im guessing itll let you do either, and if it dont ask with the first 2 restarts you are home free.

You can format the disk, either copy the Win9x cabs to a directory or just have the cd handy, boot to the windows 2000 cd, and install from there. Just point to the cab files directory on the HD when prompted (or put the Win9x cd in drive when prompted). Actually, you can fdisk, formatting is not needed, Windows 2000 setup will ask you if you want to format the unformatted space as NTFS or Fat32.

FYI: You cannot actually upgrade from Win9x to Windows 2000, it will install as a dual bootup system. I discovered this and ended up figuring out he above-mentioned workaround because I did not want more than one OS installed on this particular system.

Piece of cake 🙂
