Windows 2000 slow with XP 1800

Not sure what it could be. It just lags every now and then. Just installed it a week ago. Tryed a bios update on my epox 8KHA+ but didn't really help. Anybody have any suggestions?My duron 1 ghz never did this.

Does the hard drive LED come on when it lags? If it does, then that's a sign of excessive disk swapping. Did you do a clean install of the OS?

yes, it's a clean install. How would i get rid of the excessive disk swapping though?

Well, disk swapping happens when you run out of available RAM. Your computer pretty much uses your hard drive as memory instead of your actual RAM. Of course hard drives are much slower than RAM, hence the lag. Go to the task manager and see if there's anything eating up a lot of memory. Also, see what your cpu usage is. If it's nearly maxed out, then that could explain the lagginess as well.

do you use acpi? what about making sure UDMA mode is turned on?

one of my ata controllers develops a timeout error every once in a while... annoying as fark.

Well I don't think its eating up all my ram(512 megs). I'll figure it out next week once finals are over. Thx for all your help guys.

Try installing the latest VIA 4in1 drivers. It sounds like UDMA mode isn't set or there's other IDE problems.

Geekish Thoughts you rule. I can't believe I didn't think of that myself. One thing I just forgot to install when I put windows 2000 on. Seems to have fixed it. Just got done playing an hour of Jedi Knight 2 and it ran so smoothly. Thx again.
