Windows 2000 slow down - why?

When I do a fresh install of 2000, it's really fast, and explorer pops up right after a click, my computer is pretty damn fast, but I'm not sure if it was SP2 or what, but lately it's taking explorer like 20 seconds to open a window or check my computer, or open outlook, it's just really slow, anyone else experienced this? Also, when I boot up the hd crunches for like 30 secs and it didn't do that before either, any insights would be greatly apprciated.

thanks

oh yeah, everything else seems to run fast, games, netscape, dreamweaver, photoshop, it's just explorer that's slows to a crawl...I'm thinking it might be the latest patches but I'm not sure.
