ok this is mess that I've been brought into midway. As far as I can tell here is the situation.

1) win2k server PDC on CCC.com
2) win2k8 server added, and dcpromo ran when it was named win-12345etc.ccc.com
3) everything is working but they want to rename the 2k8 box to ABC?PDC.ccc.com
4) FSMO roles have not been transferred.

I've tried the NETDOM computername rename but it appears it doesn't work

i get the error:

Unable to add xyz as an alternative name for this computer, the error is:

The computer rename preparation procedure is available only if the functional level of the domain to which this computer is joined is Windows Server 2003 or higher.

looks like I'm screwed since it's 2000. so what are my options here. I've been brought in midwork and this sucks.

Why not just demote the 2008 box, rename it, and then repromote?

There are no PDCs in AD.

yep I'm about to do this but was hoping for a 2nd opinion. But I have to check to see what else they've done to the 2k8 box before I proceed. Any other opinions?

You should be able to rename the 2k8 box from the system properties window. If you cannot, there's something else going on.
