Hey guys and gals, I need to pick your all-knowing brains.

I have a Windows 2000 Server DC on my network that as of several months ago began running like crap and I can't figure out why.

It's just very very slow when accessing the disks, and now it takes forever (~15 minutes) to reboot whereas it used to be lightning quick on a restart (~2-3 mins). This is a Compaq ML520 G1/2 (can't remember) with 1GIG RAM. I have checked processes running and suprisingly it looks like usually 98-99% of the CPU time is idle! The server is running 6 18 gig SCSI drives in a RAID 5 config. 2 of the drives are hotswaps.

Access to the server is limited to very few people. No web browsing at all is done on this server except in rare cases to DL drivers etc. Spybot/Ad aware scan shows nothing. Virus scan shows nothing. I have uninstalled everything not crucial to the core duties of this file/print server. I have cleared the IE cache, deleted temporary files, and defragged almost weekly. Service Pack 4 and the latest security updates are all installed. I have even tried re-installing SP4.

I need some ideas on why this server is running like crap lately. As I said this has been going on several months so it is not a recent virus/worm development issue such as Win32.Lovgate.AL, etc.

Thank you for ideas.

Do you monitor your SCSI array? Perhaps some of your drives have failed. It's not that likely, but it still could have happened.

Check event viewer for any errors and tell us what you find.

Reboots on a DC can take forever if it can't resolve DNS correctly. Once it's up and running are there any issues? What, exactly, is slow? If you log in over the network, map a drive to it, and then browse around or copy files to it, is it slow?
