Windows 2000 Server permissions help

Well I got the Win2k Server setup today without Active Directory installed (our office only has 50 employees). I've allocated roughly 30GB as storage for users on a partitioned D: drive. My
problem is that I cannot get the damn permissions to work right for a specific user.

E.g On the win2k server machine (server name is MMGSERVER), I have created a user called "clint" (hence username is MMGSERVER\clint). Now I have created a directory on the server called "clint" which all users can read and write too. However, in the directory "Clint", I have another sub directory called "emailbackup". This is essentially a backup of my emails and which I only want myself to read and write too. No one else should be able to access the directory.

So what I did was deny everyone except "clint" all permissions. Now only "clint" should be able to read and write tothe folder. The problem starts here.

From my XP machine (user account is "clint" on the xp machine), when I try to access the email backup folder, it says access denied. When mapping myself to the "clint" folder, I clearly remember entering login information as MMGSERVER\clint along with the password. That didn't work so I tried "clint" as the login but that failed too.

Directory structure is as follows (on the serveR): D:\Clint (accessible by everyone) and D:\Clint\emailbackup (should only be accessible by user "clint").

Why can't I access the "emailbackup" folder from my xp machine. I setup all the permissions correctly even though I'm a beginner at win2k server (but I've worked with setting similar permissions on Novell NEtware). Also, does anybody have a nice guide for setting permissions and do I need Active Directory enabled i.e. will it make my job easier?

Thanks for your help.
