Windows 2000 running slow

I have windows 2000 on a AMD K6 2 475mhz laptop with 64mb ram and a 6gig hd. I know it's not a very fast computer. I have had this load of windows 2000 on it for about 8 months I believe and within the last 2 weeks it has just gotten very slow it seems to me it's just because of all the stuff I have loaded and I need to clean it up. Normally when this happened with 98se I found it to be easiest to just reload it but I have accumalated so much stuff on my laptop I don't want to do that.

My question is I know in 98 to stop stuff from starting at start up you could go into msconfig since everything is not listed in start menu/programs/start up. I assume there is a program like msconfig in Win 2k but I haven't found it. Anyone know?

Also, does anyone suggest a program to clean up the registry in Win 2k? Previously while working with 9x I tried some of the registry cleaning programs and I found all of them that I tried at least to be junk and just another thing sitting in the systray.

Thanks for your help.🙁

64 MB RAM is not enough for 2k. check the task manager to see how much you're using.

there are a couple of ways to check to see what's loading at startup.

The first is to check start menu -> programs -> startup. you'll probably find ms office and lots of other stuff that's not necessary.

the second is to check the registry. HKLM -> software\ms\windows\current version\run has apps that don't show up in the start up folder.

startup control panel is a nice app that lets you change the startup items without having to edit the registry.

I know 64MB of ram is pushing it because that's the minimum but the speed is ok until recently. I gotta buy some memory though.

Thanks for telling me the reg key and I'll try that program.🙂

You can actually copy msconfig from win98 and use it in 2000. It will give you some error messages, but it still works.

Anyone know what these lines in my registry do? This is Win 2k.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"New.net Startup"="rundll32 C:\\WINNT\\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup"
"Synchronization Manager"="mobsync.exe /logon"

when was the last time you ran defrag??? also get yourself a copy of nortons utilities it will help clean out your register and many other things. maybe it's time for a reload

new dot net is an app that monitors which online sites you visit. i think bearshare installs it.

edit: mobsync is ok. it's on every 2k machine i've seen.
