Hi, this is my first post. First of all I'd like to thank the Hot Deals forum for dragging me to AnandTech forums daily (even though I just leeched and didn't contribute/comment) and ridding me of badly needed cash for nice cool gadgets.
Facts:
WAN Link via an Ethernet connection at dorm
MS Win2000 Server
52 to 54.6kbps Dial-up connection
My connection is extremely slow; I'm a college student where a single T1 is shared with all dorm students. Using VisualRoute, the report always mentions dropped packets at the router of the T1. Usually I dial-up to get consistent network response and reliable downloads.
I noticed something interesting a while ago, I started an ftp download, and then I started my dial-up connection. All was normal and slow with the download, until the dial-up connection was established. Once both connections were active, outgoing traffic went out through the modem and incoming traffic came through the Ethernet. The download speed before both connections were 42k and after both connections averaging 400-600k with peaks up to 1.5m.
When the transfer session finished, all of the traffic went through the modem and at modem speeds.
I've observed network performance through Lucent's MyVitalAgent and have been able to duplicate this numerous times. I've found nothing helpful with such a router configuration (Win,Linux,Other) except for the similarity of old style satellite routers. I just specified Windows 2000 Server since I know it better than Linux
So after all of this, my question is, Can I configure a router to have incoming packets be received by Ethernet and outgoing to be sent via modem connection?
Assistance is much appreciated,
Chris A
