Windows 2000 problems with ABIT KT7A Raid

I am having problems with an ABIT KT7A Raid motherboard and Windows 2000 install. After the format, when the Windows 2000 files start to be copied to the hard drive, I get the message "the file agentsvr.exe was not copied correctly". I get this using the Raid controller with two striped drives, or with a single drive connected to the standard primary IDE controller as master. I have tried an original and CD-R copies of a different original Windows 2000 Pro CD. The CD's have all worked fine for other installs in the past week. I stripped the system down to nothing but the motherboard, Enermax 431W power supply, memory and a video card. I have tried a different video card also. I have tried 3 different CD-ROMS to install from. I am using a Thunderbird 1.4G and the latest ABIT firmware (dated last week) NOT the Beta firmware. As you can see, I have done my best to troubleshoot this problem, but I have NEVER seen this error before, where files are seemingly corrupt off known good CD's and known good components. I think I have eliminated everything but the motherboard (and the CPU - but this does not fail in any way like a bad CPU, although I have reduced the CPU speed just to test). Has ANYONE seen this error? Any ideas what might be going on here?
Thanks for any information.

I too have had problems with win2k and the abit kt7a-raid mobo..

My problem was that when I tried to install service pack 2 it would freeze in middle of installing.. the same with directx 8.0a and sblive sounddrivers.. Also when I tried to update my VIA 4in1 I saw that even though it looks like the drivers are installing, it doesn't do so.. I went to device manager and the drivers for the ide bus controller were still the same old drivers.. so I had to manually update that one.

I'm also getting freeze ups while doing normal stuff like browsing the internet and listening to mp3's.. and that's weird.

I was wondering if u had any problems with watching dvds, as I'm also having that problem.. the video is choppy. If you could check how you fare with video2000 from madonion.com (video benchmarking program from the same dudes who did 3dmark2001) I'd be very grateful, as I'm also having problems viewing the video tests in video2000 (the dangling pendulum)

Any thoughts ?

I don't think you quite understood - I am not that far along at all! I can NOT install Windows 2000 Pro AT ALL (due to the error listed in the first post) and that is the FIRST thing I am trying to do!! I am not anywhere near running benchmarks or testing DVD's. I need to get past where I am at or this board will be going back.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks,

You might be barking up the wrong tree. This could be software related. There is reference to "agentsvr.exe" in the MS Knowledge base. However it is for Office XP install, not Win2K. At least, that was all I could find. The MSKB is not my favorite cup of tea! You may want to give them a call on this.

Strange that I have done about 50 Windows 2000 installs, or more, and never seen this before. Everything sure points to this motherboard to me.
Any other ideas, PLEASE!!

I run Win2k on my Abit KT7ARAID, and I had no problem installing it. I have seen this error, but with a different file name. Try copying the entire CD to a directory on the hard drive, then running setup from there, just don't go and reformat the drive during setup. The install will take a tad longer, though. Look at the manual to find out what the switch is for installing without floppies. I think you're gonna type "winnt /b" at the prompt I could be wrong, though. When setup asks you where it can find Windows installation files, poit it to the directory you copied the files to.

Well, that might work, but it should not be necessary. Why should I buy a mainboard that will not allow for installation of an OS from a CD?

I had this same problem.

Here's what the problem is:
You might have a bad stick(s) of RAM.

Win2k would not install for me if bad RAM is present. Even though the RAM passed the flimsy AWARD BIOS check, Win2k wouldn't install with that RAM present.

I contacted a buddy that works at Microsoft, he suggested that solution. It's also in their Knowledge base as a solution.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

Could you point him to that in the KB? I couldn't find it, but that doesn't mean squat. I'm not very succesful with the KB.

I will try different RAM, but the stuff I have is Micron 512M X 2 (1 GIG) of ECC just purchased from Crucial. I REALLY DOUBT that it is bad RAM.
WILL SEE AND WILL REPORT!

I found it at:
http://search.support.microsoft.com...amp;VRL=ENG&SA=GN&Go.x=31&Go.y=16
If that is a long enough URL for you!! Unfortunately it is NOT APPLICABLE TO MY PROBLEM!
I do appreciate the effort to help me, however, for sure!!!

I don't SHOUT for full sentences, or ever mean to be in any way rude. I am just expressive, and occasionally want to emphasize a few words. My caps lock is never on, I assure you, just the shift key here and there. Again, just my way of talking, not yelling!

I think it is going to be memory (will verify later) and what is shocking me is that the ABIT KT7A Raid will not support Registered 512M ECC DIMMS, where the Iwill will. I will post a separate thread on this.
Thanks,
Andrew
