Ok.. just did a FRESH re-install of Windows2K on my dually computer (BP6 2x600 celery)

It was quick as heck before I started to install apps. Well, I finally realized that McAfee was slowing EVERYTHING down. When I say slowing down, I mean to a CRAWL.

Eudora takes 20seconds to open! Thats over 10x what it normally takes! Right click menus take 5 seconds to come up. A new Explorer window takes 5 seconds to come up... suffice it to say, it is VERY SLOW! :)

What is going on here? Is McAfee 4.5 not compatible with Win2k Pro? Processor utilization is almost zero while I wait for these things to come up... so I know its not stalling there..

Anybody know what the problem might be? I installed the latest dats and scan engine.. same deal.

If anybody has advice, I would really apprecaite it! :)

Thanks,
-Pablo

Well, I have seen more PC's messed up when using McAfee that I care to comment on. Since I refuse to install it on any of my own PC's, I can't say what is specificly wrong with McAfee. But I have seen a disturbing pattern on the PC's that I work on...

As for anti-virus programs, I never have them "auto-load" with Windows. They tend to really take a bite out of the precious resources. Only time I enable it, is if the customer loves to send/receive Email attachments :(

Sorry if this did not directly help you...

Get Norton. Mcafee is terrible. It uses up to much resources. The avconsole crap sucks.

2001 Norton does the job.

I'm using Norton 7.0 Corp Edition here w/ no problems speed-wise (or any other type). I last used McAfee years ago before there was such a thing as real time protection. Wasn't bad then but I've heard a lot of these programs can really take a bit out of your performance.

I found the same problems. Norton would not work on Win2000 when I installed it last year. My only solution then was to install the McAfee online Clinic.. Works nice, not bloated like the retail version.

If I had a choice then, I would not have used McAfee, but this Clinic thing grows on ya

We have Norton installed at work, and I certainly notice that it has slowed my W2K machine down. Really annoying. Wouldn't touch McAfee with a ten foot pole. Never could get it to work right on any computer.

Turn off the System Scan and leave on the Email, Internet, and Download scans. This will fix your slow downs, and keep you safe from downloading something nasty. I had the same problem, Eudora would take 4-5 seconds to open until I disabled the System scan. Then it was ~.5 seconds or so. Fast.
