Windows 2000 Pro boot up time

How fast does Windows 2000 Pro boot for you guys and gals?

My W2k Pro box:
AMD Athlon 1.4 @ 1.6
512MB PC2100 DDR
IBM 75GXP 75GB (ATA100, 7200 RPM)
Nvidia GeForce 3
Linksys LNE100TX NIC
SB Live 5.1 X-gamer
ATI TV Wonder (PCI)
Pioneer DVD-116S

It takes me roughly 60+ seconds to boot

Meanwhile, my Dell Inspiron 8100 with P3-M 1.2 GHz,256MB PC133 SDRAM, XP Pro boots in under 30 seconds flat.

How do I tune Windows 2000 pro to make it boot faster? I heard that some ppl can get 2k Pro to boot in 29 seconds, I think this is BS because one of MS's goals was to make XP Pro boot in under 30 seconds (if they made 2k Pro boot this fast, why make it a goal for their "newest" OS)

Yeah - I really like my computers to boot up within a reasonable amount of time. I only leave my laptop on 24/7 becuase my AMD system hogs up a lot of electricity ($$$) so it takes a long time to boot up each time.

I guess it just isn't for me.. I don't care how fast my computer boots, how high I can get my FPS in a game, or even how many more/less points my system is versus another in a benchmark test...
Anyways, most of my computers are left on. However, in the event of a shutdown, boot times vary... My Athlon system is somewhat latent, the bios takes forever to post, but after that, it goes by fast. Maybee 45 seconds? Booting the OS doesn't take long, it's the network connection that lags the startup process... My nix box boots up rather quickly, say 30 seconds?

How old is the install? Do you have a busy toolbar?

The install was October 2001 - I haven't really used the system much, except for games every 2-3 days.

The toolbar is empty except for:
Intellipoint Software
Norton Anti-Virus auto-protect

The slowdown isn't during the toolbar app loading stage - it's mostly in the beginning (the black screen with the white bar that scrolls across), then the 640x480? screen with the torquise background.

I d/l'd BootVIS for XP Pro, but it doesn't work on 2k pro.

BTW I timed it from the start of "Starting Windows 2000" with the black DOS screen, it took 54 seconds to get from that to the point where I could open My Computer (double clicking it).

That seems fast to me for Windows 2000. Most of the Windows 2000 machines at my work take much longer then that.

If you have the time, try setting up your pc to obtain an IP address statically, it might help.

Just be glad you arent running 3 SCSI controllers with 10 drives that need to be detected a couple times per bootup along with the networks.

That's pretty normal for 2000, it is not a fast booting OS. XP on the other hand is but if you really wanta complain, install Advanced Server and wait the 5-10 minutes it takes to boot up =).

Or do a defrag on a raid 0+5 array.. I installed Advanced Server twice this weekend.. Im just now finishing up.. sheesh.

You should develop an unattended installation if you are going to be installing servers a lot.

Its a definite time saver.

I have a 1 gig Tbird and 2000 takes about 75 seconds to boot. I find it annoying too because I don't keep the machine on 24/7.

I don't leave my AMD system on 24/7 either - i looked at my electric bill and the system just hogs up too much power.

Instead I usually leave my Dell Inspiron 8100 on 24/7. That thing uses hardly any juice at all - me likes!!!

I have a 1ghz tbird 200 fsb that takes 53 seconds to boot from the time it starts to count ram (512 mb) to the time I can double click on my computer in win 2k. From the win2k dos type screen it takes 41 seconds to boot.
Is your computer on a network? How much stuff do you have in your startup folder?
