I want to get a network up and going
I have win2k on my computer and 98 on the laptop
I have been able to use and browse the network up until today
the Win98 machine sees itself and the Windows 2000 machine can't even browse the network
I have them networked with TCP/IP for games and files.
any suggestions?

Use NETBUEI also. I tried with just TCP/IP and things did not work well. TCP/IP is mainly for the internet and also for printing. I am networking 3 computers. 2 has win2k and my main comp was running win98se but I just changed to WinME(to me same as win98se). Everything is fine now. Last night I just finished running my cables to get the machines in the bedrooms. I had set them up in one place just to work out all the kinks, now that has been done they each now have a home. ICS is working fine too.

TCP/IP has become the defacto standard network protocol. Not just for the internet or printing at all, although it certainly works well for both. If you would post some more info, someone here might could help. The main question and first troubleshooting step (Read: not using Network Neighborhood or Places) is to see if you can ping. If you cannot ping the remote machine can you ping locally, meaning the IP of the machine you are at and/or the loopback address. (127.0.0.1)

Blayze,
I had a similar problem with windows 2000 and windows 98.

I had windows 98 in my server and then upgraded to windows 2000.

My server could browse the other computers but the computers with windows 98 could not even access my server :(

UPDATE Window 98 machine can ping itself but not the Windows 2000 machine
and the 2000 machine can ping itself but not the Win98 one.

if I install NetBEUI I can share files etc... but I still can't ping the other computer.

also Im having this error in event viewer. Although I had this error when the network was working as well.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp

Don't know Win2000, but for Win9x:

To Network puters you need to have a common Protocal and "File and Print Sharing" enable.

Both puters have to have "File and Print Sharing" enable by right click: Networking Neighborhood icon > Properties > Client for Microsoft Networks > Add

Make sure "File and Print Sharing" is in the "Primary Network Logon" window...And make sure Files & Printer access is enable in the "File and Print Sharing" window (locate under "File and Print Sharing" button).

I have use TCP/IP, NETBEUI and IPX/SPX for LANs, but I suggest NETBEUI (none routable)for speed and eases on setup.

TCP/IP is use when you want all puters to connect to the Internet (routable), then you have to set up IP Address and Subnet Mask.

To find out your IP adress click: Start > Run > then type WINIPCFG in the "Run" window (make sure you use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol [DHCP], so you could get the correct IP address that your Internet Service Provider [ISP] gave to you)

Both puters should have the same subnet address, but diff IP address.

Ps. If you use one puter with Win2000 as Server/Gateway/Firewall for the second puter to log on then both puters could logon to the Internet on one IP address.

IF you have network connectivity when NetBEUI is installed but cannot ping, then you likely have TCP/IP configured incorrectly. Remove all TCP/IP settings and redo them, making sure they have the same network ID, ie.. 192.168.X.X with a 24 bit mask, or whatever range that you use with like masks. If you have internet connection sharing on, turn it off until you get your LAN up and running.
