Windows 2000 pagefile size?

Hello, just wondering what you guys think is a good pagefile size to use in win2k. I hear that 1.5xRam is a good size, but since I have 512 megs I think a 700+ meg pagefile is a bit excessive. Isn't the pagefile just making up for physical ram, so the more physical ram you have, the smaller the pagefile should be?

yeah, well, people also say to put your page file on another partition, or even another hdd. But I never see a difference

My personal preference is to set it to HALF the size of the physical memory when the system has 256MB or more of RAM. That way, there's a file waiting to be used (and Windows will make it bigger if necessary) but it isn't taking up a big chunk of my drive space...

It's always a trade off between the number of parallel processes and performance. If you want to make maximum use of your system (and with acceptable performance), 1.5X RAM is a good number to start with, however if most time you go after speed, then set the page file as small as possible and don't run too many concurrent processes, or don't frequently run too many different processes sequentially.
