We have 8 p2p XP PRO computers. I want to add an older computer that has Win2000 on the network for the "sole" purpose of being basically a "server" for our Quickbooks Pro data file.

We were having problems with our snap server NAS device hosting the company file for quickbook, as it would crash quite often. I guess the snap server OS is a non windows type, but works as a multi-platform and it seems to crash, on quickbooks only, not any other data files. I moved the company file to MY HD Win Xp PRO and it has been 4 months with NO problems. I dont want it on my HD cause if I have to reboot, it can cause problems in any open files of quickbbooks. I want to store it on the Win2000 computer, and just leave it on indefinately. I can back it up over the network as I have been doing, but dont know if there is an issue woth the two different OS's.

BTW, I am replaceing my old Snap server 1000 (30 gig) with a snapserver 4200 (1TB). I dont think their OS has changed so I dont want to put it back on that, unless someone else knows differently.

Thanks for any advice.

I dual boot Win2K and WinXP. When in Win2K, I still connect to the other rigs on my home network that are running XP.

Do keep in mind that Win2k allows only 10 concurrent users, i.e. only 10 users can access that pc where the QB data is stored simultaneously. If you have more than ten users accessing that pc at the same time, you need a server version of win2k with adequate CALs, otherwise you should have no problems - though you may want to read up on folder share permissions at windows web site. For plain file sharing Win2k server is very easy to configure and set up, does not require the services of a consultant, and although a little out of date, SP4 would be good, very stable. You dont need win2003 server versions unless you need to do more.

Thanks all of you. Our quickbook version only allows 5 users at a time anyway, which is more than we need. 2 or 3 use it alot throughout the day, the rest only use it to update their time sheets. It should be fine it seems. Thanks again.
