I am trying to upgrade my old compaq presario 5660 from windows 98 to win 2000 i am keep on getting the message "insert windows 2000 cd-rom and press enter" on startup. I put the CD-Rom in and hit enter and it does not get recognised for some reason. Can someone tell me how the directory structure should look like for win2000 installation CD or what am i doing wrong.

Should be a non-issue if you have a valid CD. The I386 folder contains the meat of the installation files, but there are other folders/files on the CD as well.

edit: just so you know, the firewire in the system will no longer work on anything later than 98. i have tried me, xp, 2k, 2k3, ect..

they just never made drivers for it.

It is a CD-r and i also tried to use CD-rw my drive can read both and gives me screen where it ask me to install winows 2000, or restore etc etc. it even gets to the point where it asks me for the key etc.. When i restart my computer that's when it gets screwed and asks me to insert cd labeled windows 2000 pro and when i put it it and it enter it keeps coming back with the same message again and again.
My cd's I386 folder is in folder called windows 2000.

I copied this cd from someone. I386 folder is not a parent folder on the CD it is under Windows2000 folder which is also under some other folder. I think i did try to burn all the folders and files that were under windows2000 on another cd-rw.

Problem occurs when the computer restarts and asks me to insert cd labeled windows 2000 professional.
From windows 98 when i put the cd in it gets read and start copying all the files and even asks me to put the key etc.

I386 *should* be a root folder on the CD. When you install, if setup can't find [cd rom letter here]:\i386 then it won't work. It doesnt' ask you to point it to where the files are at. It just stops and wants the real CD.

Next time don't burn everything in un-needed sub-folders. I386, BOOTDISK, DISCOVER, SUPPORT, VALUEADD.... those are examples of the "root" level folders in the windows 2000 CD.

Thanks.. When i go home i will double check to make sure i have I386, DISCOVER, SUPPORT, VALUEADD and BOOTDISK as root folders. I do think that i had these as the root in one of my attempt to put the right folders as root. I also have some extra files except these folders and i don't think i saw any BOOTDISK folder.
