Windows 2000 Installation Help Needed!!!

I had Windows ME on this computer. I decided to 'format c:' and I was planning on installing Windows 2000 Proffesional Edition. So I stick the 2000 CD in and restart. It runs through some type of computer hardware configuration thing. It then comes up with a menu where I click on Windows 2000 Setup. The immediate screen after that reads:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic of setup program."

I then have to quit the setup. What is going on and how do I fix it?

>>I believe I use ATA Ultra 100
>>I have tried using fdisk and partioning the drives. I thought I did it right but I might have screwed something up...

I just went through this nightmare myself - try booting from the CD-Rom and letting Win2k do it's thing that way. I had to let it format the HDD, and partions rather than starting with a fresh, formated C drive.

The problem you are having is the ATA-100 controller. If you are using a third party controller win2k will not detect the drives if it does not have the drivers loaded. There are two ways you can go around it.

1. When you boot from the CD to do the win2k install...it'll say hit F6 to to install 3rd party SCSI driver. And then get the drivers (make sure they are on a floppy) and then install them.

2. Install Win2k without the ATA-100 controller card. After windows is all finished...and this is the important part. Install the drivers for the ATA-100 controller before you shut down your computer and change your harddrives to the controller. (if you don't do that, you will crash windows.) And you should be able to be up and running.

It doesnt get far enough to 'do its thing.' It gives me this error almost immediatly. I even went back and tried to reinstall Windows ME and I got an error there now.

I will try the first thing you said. Since I have no idea how to get around the error to install 2000 since it makes me quit setup right away. But, how do I get the drivers for the ATA Ultra 100?

I just installed Windows 2000 server i dont thing there will be a difference in pro or server in the installation process. well anyhoo.. i have a A7v133 mobo and i had my harddrives on ATA-100 (the mobo has 4 IDE connectors,2 IDE, and 2 IDE for ata-100) so i had my hardrives on the ATA-100 side and tried to install win2000 and it gave me an error saying that i dont have any space in the drive. well i changed my main hard drive to the other IDE and everthing worked. I have not although tried switching the IDE again.
Hope this helps

I will try that if what lilnnjaboy suggested does not work. I just don't know where to get the correct drivers for the ATA 100.

A7V133 (same routing for any board):
[*]Get drivers from www.asus.com put them on a floppy.
[*]Start win2K setup.
[*]During install press F6 to enter additional drivers...

Did it for me...

Joachim

I am currently downloading this:

VIA® 4 in 1 driver (for all A7Vxx, K7Vxx, CUVxx, P3Vxx series)

I hope this is what you are talking about!

you would need to find out what type of ATA-100 controller...does the ASUS board use third party controllers? If so they should supply the drivers on the CD. And just copy them to a floppy. If you have to download them...go to ASUS website...find the specific drivers for the ATA controller.

If this is too much hassle just do the second one I said...connect it to the regular controller and then install the drivers for the ATA controller once you are in windows. Since it is an onboard controller...it'll dectect them once you do the driver install. And after it asks you to restart...just hook the drives up to the controller and you should be roaring to go.

I ran into this similar problem using the promise cards

Not really but you'll probably need those anyway...

Promise Ultra100TM IDE Controller (PDC20265) Driver (for A7V with Promise Ultra100 IDE controller)

OK sorry, I am not sure what the regular controller is...Again I am not very familiar with this type of thing. If you could explain how to do this that would help a lot. Do you want me to just disconnect the ATA-100 Controller? Also on the controller it says Promise so I would assume that is what you are talking about?

You could get the of the asus cd also but i see no harm in getting the latest...
Especially when those from the cd didn't work 😱)

Alright, I am assuming that you guys are assuming that I have an Asus Motherboard? I am not really sure...

*thanks for being patient with me so far*

OK-

I am ready to try this way:

"Install Win2k without the ATA-100 controller card. After windows is all finished...and this is the important part. Install the drivers for the ATA-100 controller before you shut down your computer and change your harddrives to the controller. (if you don't do that, you will crash windows.) And you should be able to be up and running"

-But I need somebody to further explain in detail what exactly to do!

I tried all the different drive suggestions thus far and none have rid me of the error.
