Windows 2000 Install: hard drive not found

I purchased MS Windows 2000 the other day after I reformatted my hard drive (previously WinME FAT32).

I booted from the WinME floppy disk, and tried to run setup on the Win2000 CD. It said setup can not be run in MS DOS mode.

Okay. So I ran the bootdisk program on the Win2000 CD and created the four floppy disk bootable Win2000 install set. After booting from the floppies it errors saying hard drive not detected.

Could FAT32 be causing a problem? If so, how do i fix it? The hard drive is on an integrated Promise Ultra ATA-100 EIDE controller, is it possible Win2000 just isn't seeing it?

It is very possible that Win2K isn`t seeing it. The controller card is probably the problem. Try and connect HD to MB IDE channel, IDE1, then use your 4 setup disks to load the OS,at some point it will detect your drive, which you should partition. fat32, or ntfs, both work equally well. Now i had a similar problem with a promise Ultra 66 card. I could Install the card later when the OS was installed and then had to use the promise drivers to activate the card.

I moved the hd off he promise controller... now the computer is stuck in an infinite reboot cycle... it turns on, detects drives and says: press a key to reboot

and that's where I'm stuck at now... lol

Put the drive back on the ATA-100 ports. Have the drivers for the controller on a floppy. When you boot the Win2K CD (is this possible for you?), it gives you the opportunity to press F6 to add additional storage-related device drivers.

yes I did manage to get it to boot from the CD now, do they have to be special drivers or just the generic type promise provides?

alright, I'm all up and running except for my SB Live! 5.1 card. Win2000 Pro is awesome. It handles 256MB RAM so much better than WinME. Its like I upgraded my system.

You did upgrade your system from WinME to Win2K.😀
Just kidding I know what you mean. I felt the same when I went from Win98SE to Win2K.
