Windows 2000 initial setup questions and a few problems

I just installed Win2k at home yesterday. I have been using the OS at work for over 6 months, so I'm not a n00b in some terms, but I have never setup the OS with home style intentions before.

Problem:
I tried installing Win2k from the CD (whilst in DOS), but it reported that setup wasnt runnable from Dos. Fair enough I thought and had a look at install options from Win98. I chose 'Clean Install', as I intended to format c:. Long story short, I ended up with a system dual booted Win98/Win2000. Is there any easy way for me to remove 98 and all the old apps that were left on C, or am I better off just re-doing it, and formatting C: from DOS, then using the boot CDs (which I did not have yesterday)...

Question:
I notice that Win2k service pack 2 is available from Windows Update. What sort of improvements are made to the OS? What sort of changes? Has anyone noted any bad side effects? Also, would I have to install service pack 1 (which I dont think is available fro download).?

Many thanks, await your replies.

Hi mate,

Let me get this right - you just want to install Windows 2000 (you don't want to dual boot Win2K and Win98)? If that is the case I would format the drive and install Win2K off the CD and reinstall all the apps. If you want Win98/2000 dual boot install Win98 first and then 2k - but I guess thats what you've already done .

You don't need to install service pack 1 before installing service pack 2. If possible download the full network install (about 100Mb), otherwise you will need to download the service pack off the web everytime you install.

List of updates contained with Service Pack 2

Also, make sure you download DirectX8 for Windows 2000 (the Windows 9x version doesn't work with Win2K).

Hey Mitzi 🙂

Thanks for the info. Yeah I really dont want to dual boot with Win98... 😉

I tried to format the drive, but the Win2k CD I have at home is without its boot floppies (they are here at work, and I'll take them home today) and the CD wouldnt run from the DOS boot floppy that I had, alas I was forced to install from the Win98 GUI.

I'll sort it out tonight and get it working properly.

Thanks
