Windows 2000 Has Diappeared?

I had to reload Win 98 SE on my C drive and have since noticed when booting up that I am no longer given the option of selecting either Win 98 or Win 2000 which is on my D drive. What exactly has happened and how can I correct this problem?

I've never dual booted, but hearing everyone say that you should install 2k second, by you reinstalling 98, you either have to change some ini file or reinstall 2k. By reinstalling 98, it's like you installed 98 second instead of 2k. I have no idea though why 2k should be second, and could care less because i don't see a reason to dual boot unless the other is linux.

when you installed 98xx it overwrote the boot loader

you may beable to repair the w2k instalation


but I am not sure

IF you reinstall win2k to the same directory it is in the boot loader will be back.
I've done it a few times myself.

Do I have to do a complete reinstall? Someone told me that an option is presented of reparing. But whether the boot loader is only reloaded I'm not sure never having done this before. Could you expand on the steps and process you went through and whether or not I am going to have to reload all my applications? In that instance, since Win 2000 is using FAT 32 and I can still access it from my C drive I would like to copy my applications and documents before this and then paste them back. Is the ERD disk I created any help in this instance?

All you need to do is boot off of the CD or the 4 floppy disks andgo through the Repair mode. From there, you should be able to repair the Master Boot Record and the Boot Loader program that is required by Windows 2000. The only other option would be to get BootMagic from PowerQuest Software. However, the repait from the installation media of Windows 2000 should fix your problem. If you made an ERD (Emergancy Recover Disk), your repair will go much more smoothly. If you have not made an ERD, you will have to create it from the NTBACKUP program. Also, each ERD is custom to each machine that it is created from. So you cannot just create an ERD from on machine and then use it on another machine, unless you have an identical machine in every way.

Someone told me that when I reinstalled Win 98 that a number files were lost, which live in the root folder of C: boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr. If this is the case could I not simply copy and paste them directly from the CD back to the C drive?

You'd be better off doing the repair install since you don't know what or how many files were overwritten.

No all you need to do is boot to the Win2K cd and repair your install of it. It will then give you the dual boot menu back.
