Windows 2000 - Direct X - any solution yet for slow performance?

I've always known that DirectX perfomance under Win2k was poor, and since i just turned my PC into Win98SE and Win2k dual boot i thought i'd run a few tests. These were run in 3dmark 2001 and using DirectX 8.0A:

Win98SE: 2652
Win2k: 1906

Yet i saw this article claiming that Win2k is slightly faster (than ME) for DirectX:
3dMark2000 scores for 2k and ME

I know its for 3dMark2000, but even so how did they get Win2k as fast as ME, let alone faster!

Any hints for me? I want D3D in Win2k! Ta

btw i'm using:
VIA 4in1 4.29
Nvidia 6.31

I checked out some other forums and everyone seemed to think that the 7.52 nvidia drivers were best.

They didn't make any difference for me in Win98SE, but when i tried them in Win2k they sure did!

My 3dMark2001 score has gone up from 1903 to 2491 now. Still short of W98SE's 2652 but a lot closer!

Can anyone give me any other ways of getting that score level with 98SE? ta

I have been battling the same issues with a similar setup to yours...continued lower performance in Dx...i have the latest bios, latest drivers for video and mobo, hotfix for win2k, sp1, via agp registry correction, and have nearly lost my hair trying to regain the same level of performance I had with Win98...all to no avail...i still get 10-15% better performance under win98 that 2kpro...in my searches i keep running into the "wait for sp2" mantra...so i am just dual booting for now...and probably till xp hits the shelves....good luck and if you find a way to regain 100% performance please post it here

With Windows 2000 it's not the OS itself that is slow with DirectX. It releates more to the video card drivers being more optimized for gaming under Win9X then Win2k.

Indeed, the only strong advantage Win9X has over Win2000 for gaming is that the hardware has direct access to the kernel layer on 9X whereas it has to go through the OS to get access to the kernel under NT.

Certain video card drivers and programs can be optimized more for Win9X then NT and vice-versa.
