Windows 2000 died on me (registry file failure)

alright, i have a win98 and win2000 in a dual boot situation. im trying to integrate all my programs to 2000, to make everything easier. so, after using 2000 for a while, when i choose 2000, it loads the Dos screen.. and then the windows 2000 screen.. and after the blue bar is finished, i get this error:

Error: c0000218 (Registry File Failure)
The registry cannot load or find the hive file
SystemRoot/System32/Config/SOFTWARE
This file might be absent, corrupt, or missing

This is the second time it has happened. the first time i just reinstalled 2000 from 98, but the installation of 2000 had to delete everything from the previous windows 2000 directory (winnt). any help?
Things to note:

cel2 633->950 (stable)
abit be-6 2
30 gig maxtor partitioned into 2 drives:
c: contains win98
d: contains win2000

The obvious answer would be to try running the CPU with OCing it for a while to eliminate that as a factor. Registry errors are also notoriously associated with bad mem sticks.

Actually, I bet you that maxtor is a 7200rpm drive with a 2mb cache, right! It is a known problem and there is a hotfix from microsoft that fixes that problem. What is happening is the OS shuts down with a ACPI Hal enabled comp before the hardrive cache is written back to the System, scattering your registry. It happened to me twice, the first time required a reinstall, then I made an ERD and a recent copy of my registry. The hotfix fixed it for me...no more problems.

Happened to me twice in win2k before I just stopped shutting down my computer(I would turn it off during restart, no prob)The hotfix worked, now I can shut it down normal, no prob.

Samething happened to me also. Running windows 2000 and one day I booted up my pc and got the SAME error message! Im also running the SAME Maxtor 20.4 GIG H/D 7,200 drive. I had to reformat and reinstall. 🙁 Heres two tips I will give you. Ghost your system and Backup your registry once a week. If you keep your registry backed up and updated you could of tried using it to fix that error. Id advise you to do it for now on. EVERYONE should!

It sucks I know!
Good Luck!
