Windows 2000 + Compaq ProLiant ML 530 = Misrepresentation of CPUs

Hey,

At work we're installing the Compaq ProLiant ML530, its running on (2) Intel Xeons at 2.4 GHz a piece, with 2 GB of RAM. We were installing Windows 2000 Advanced Server on it, and for a strange reason, Windows detects 4 CPUs, all clocked at 37264 Mhz each 😕 I mean that's 37 GHz x 4

The firmware / BIOS has been updated on the server, and BIOS detects the 2 chips properly, at proper speeds and that theres only 2 of them.

I'm just curious to see what AT has to think of this, we're still talking with Microsoft and Compaq and want to get this sorted out before we continue with the installation.

Thanks for the help,

It's normal for Win2K to detect 4 processors, because your 2 XEONs are SMT/HyperThreading enabled. Win2K (unlike XP), cannot tell the difference between a virtual processor and a real processor.

I'm not sure about the speed detection, but you should apply Service Pack 3...that should fix the problem.

SP3 Was applied, and it didn't help, but thanks for the clarification on the hyperthreading. But the CPUs are still identified incorrectly.

yup, try disabling HT in the compaq bios. should clear things up. you guys might not even want to have it enabled in the first place depending on what you're using this server for.
