Windows 2000, CABLE MODEM, AND ICS

I have a cable modem connection that gets its IP dynamically. I have also set up (through a hub) so that my desktop can talk with my notebook. All computers involved only have one NIC. Is it possible to share the interenet connection going through my desktop with my notebook?????????? BTW I'm running Win 2k on both machines.

How does your cable modem connect to your desktop? If it is through an USB port you can simple enable connection sharing on that port.

If you only have on network card you'll need two if you cable modem is currently pluged into the current card you have now.

jsbush is right. You'll need to put in another NIC in your desktop machine. Connect your cable modem to one and enable ICS on that card. Connect the other NIC to your LAN hub and that to your other computer(s). Presto! Multiple machines sharing one dynamically assigned IP. With Win2000 (or even Win98) the machines will see each other. Don't forget to enable sharing if you need to access resources from one to the other.

Before you go about using ICS, you may want to make sure you don't receive multiple IP's from your cable modem provider. If you do, then just smack both computers onto the hub and hook up a patch cable to the uplink port on the hub (or a crossover if the hub has no uplink port). Much better than ICS.

Thanks everyone. SuperGax, the way that I get my IP address is based on the name of my computer. I don't think you're allowed to have two computers with the same name on one network. I guess I could be wrong. I guess I'll be need a second network card to pull this off, shouldn't be too hard from what everyone else said.
