Ok, here is the deal:
I just got a WinTV card, which has caused all kinds of problems. I am not sure if this is the cuase, but I doubt that it is. I am begining to suspect that my hard drive is going bad. I was having all sorts of lockup problems and other stuff with the WinTV card, and I had decided that my Hollywood Plus DVD decoder was the culprit. So, I took the DVD decoder out of the computer and reinstalled Windows 2000. The TV card worked a little better, but I still can't get overlay mode to work. I think that has something to do with my Radeon. Anyhow, after I got most of the software and drivers and such loaded up, I turned off the computer and went to bed. The next day, when I turn it on, I got a message something like this: "Windows 2000 cannot boot because the file WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM cannot be found." After some looking, I came to the conclusion that this means that my boot sector had been erased, or corrupted. So I though that it was just some random fluke, and this time I repartitioned and reformatted and installed windows 2000, instead of just reformating and installing. Well, low and behold, I get up this morning, and it did the same thing!!!!!! When I am installing, I reboot many times for all of the drivers, and it seems to work ok. The second time, I did turn the computer off a couple of times for a minute or two, and it seemed to work just fine.
So here is my question: Is my hard drive going bad? I am starting to think it is. At one point, I got a message when I was booting up that my profile was gone or corrupt, si it had to use a standard one.
Next question: How can I fix this? If I try to do the repair option off of the CD, it claims that no Windows 2000 installation could be found. It has always done this in the past, and not just on my computer. I can get into the recovey console though.
Help Me out please, this is starting to frustrate me. Some sort of temporary fix would help, even if the HD is bad, because I am going to a LAN tonight, and I don't want to have to reinstall again beforehand.
