Windows 2000 and games

yes if u have good driver support and setup games should run alot smoother in 2k, and online games get better ping cos of TCP/IP stack or something.

a good friend of mine is convinced that games don't work under W2K or at least a great majority of them don't work...

Can you give me some examples of games that work on W2K, so that I can shut him up...

thanks

So far I've run EverQuest,Baulders Gate II, Theif II, and Unreal Tournament. EverQuest had the biggest improvment for me. No studdering at all, very smooth. I was shocked by UT. I've heard so much about it not running in 2k. Runs great so far.

The majority of games run fine out of the box in Win2K.

I personally play:

Age of Empires II
MS Flight Simulator 2000
Deus Ex
Half Life/Counter Strike
Unreal Tournament
Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed
EA Sports NHL 2001
EA Sports NFL 2001
Quake III Arena

i guess i'm the only one that can complain about games in win2k. ut and q3a just don't run as well in win2k.
i'm sure once i get everything setup well it'll run better, but out of box it's just plain terrible!

It's usually easier to list games that DON'T work. And even then, you can usually install them in 98 and still run 'em in 2000.

I kinda have sound problems runnning Tony Hawk 2 on Win2K, but everything else is fine. NBA live 2k also is buggy also. Quake and Unreal run better, but sometimes my quad speaker support fails.

CS and Q3A crash on my win2k machine. they're the only games i have installed.
why...i don't know 🙁

anyone else have similar problems?

Will a game as old as Grim Fandango work on win2k? I'm thinking of picking up a cheapie version for like $10 and don't want to be disappointed.

I use strickly WIN2K for gaming. The for me to gaming in WIN2K was to have at least 256mb of ram and a 32mb video card or if it's a glide based game at least a Voodoo3. Also I'd recommend getting TweakUI and unchecking all the visual effects under the "general tab"

Unfortunately, Grim Fandango does NOT work with Windows 2000. What's odd is it starts up and you can play for ~5 minutes but it will always crash back to the desktop. Does not make any sense to me.

somebody about a week ago provided a link that showed the compadible/non compadible games under win2k. i cant remember the link but you im sure you could find it if you search. i was actually surprised at the number of games that dont work under win2k, fortunetly i dont play any of those.

What I've found with Win2000:

Half Life/Counterstrike runs great, if not better.
Quake III Arena runs ~5% slower and has brightness/gamma problems, even with latest Det3 drivers.
UT runs fine.
WinAmp will sometimes jitter, usually when there's heavy CPU/HDD utilization.

This is with 256MB of RAM and a Celeron 400, Yamaha sound - latest drivers for all. My home computer had the same problem with Win2k (where the gaming info comes from). I use Win2000 at work primary and Win98SE at home for gaming - I've switched between the two too many times to count.
